The Odyssey Essay & Final Exam Review Guide (Freshmen)

We're down to two assignments for the semester, then you're free to go to sophomore year. First, we are completing our last essay this week on The Odyssey. We are writing in the English Writing Lab through Friday when the paper is due. The assignment sheet for the essay and a guide for "leading-in" to direct quotations is attached below. Then, next week is the Final Exam, which really is just a last test because the EOCT is now meant to be the final exam for the course. The review guide for the final is attached below as well.

Now that the EOCT's are behind us, we have just two more things to check off the list. The Modernism Test is on Friday, 5/15 and the Final Exam is next week. Review guides are attached below for both of these things. Study just a little bit more, and you're a senior!

The Great Gatsby Essay (Juniors)

Ahh, the last essay of the year. We are writing on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the assignment sheet is attached below. For the most part, this is an outside of class essay that is due on Monday, May 11. I've also attached the handout on lead-ins to quotes and MLA format as references. Write hard!

Three Week Agenda 4/27-5/22/09 (Freshmen)

Wow! To think that just a few short months ago you entered Walton as a freshly minted Freshman, and now you are only three short weeks away from your sophomore year. Attached below you will find the last Three Week Agenda of the semester. Essentially, all we have left to complete is The Odyssey by Homer. We will finish reading by Monday and take our test on Tuesday, 5/5. **(This is a change from the agenda below because of the EOCT on Wednesday and Thursday next week.)** Then the last week of the semester before final exam week, we will write an essay on it in class and in the Writing Lab. We also have the End of Course Test, which is essentially the final exam for the full year, on Monday and Tuesday, May 11 and 12. I will post some materials you can use to review for it next week. Then, after the final exam (which is a glorified test because of the EOCT) we're done. Work hard for a couple more weeks and you'll have earned a summer vacation before sophomore year.

Three Week Agenda 4/27-5/22/09 (Juniors)

Well, here we are in the home stretch; only three weeks to go, and just a few more assignments. I have attached the last Three Week Agenda of the semester below. Highlights include one more test (on Modernism), two more vocabulary units (#14 and #15), an essay (on The Great Gatsby; see the next blog post for the assignment sheet), and the End of Course Test, which is essentially the final exam for the course for both semesters. Hang in there for a couple more weeks, and you'll be seniors!

The Great Gatsby (Juniors)

March 20, 2009

Back to the literature, Juniors.

Now that we have finished the Research Project & Paper (surely a tremendous relief, but also a great feeling of accomplishment, I hope), we now jump back into the literature for the course. Everyone should have a copy of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald by Monday, 3/23. Also, we will be reading the poetry of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson next week, culminating with a quiz on Friday, 3/27. Oh, and don't forget the Graduation Test next week (English on Monday morning, the other three subject areas on Tuesday-Thursday). Good luck!

Poetry Test and Project (Freshmen)

We are currently working toward the end of the poetry unit. We have read all the poems that will be on the test, which is next Tuesday, 3/24. I have posted the review sheet for the test below for anyone who would like to get a start on studying this weekend. We also are working on the Poetry Project, which consists of three parts. We have written the "Where I'm From" poem, 25 points toward the project grade, and we are beginning to present our songs, another 25 points toward the grade. Next week, starting on Thursday, we will begin reciting the poetry we will have memorized, the other 50 points toward the project grade. I have also attached the assignment sheet for the Poetry Project below.

Three Week Agenda 3/9-3/27/09 (Freshmen)

The current Three Week Agenda is attached below. Highlights of the next three weeks include reading a variety of poems over the next week and a half leading to the Poetry Test on Tuesday, 3/24, the Poetry Project, which actually consists of three separate assignments that we will complete over the next three weeks, and Vocabulary Quiz #13 this Friday, 3/13. In addition, I have also attached the last Three Week Agenda (2/16-3/6/09) which I neglected to post earlier, for those of you who would like to have a record of our activities throughout the semester. I apologize for this earlier oversight.

The latest Three Week Agenda is attached below. The next two weeks are the final stretch for the Research Project...the Rough Draft is due this Friday, 3/13, and the Final Draft next Friday, 3/20. We will be writing, teacher and peer editing, and revising in class nearly every day between now and then. After that, we will plunge back into the literature, including The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which everyone should have by Monday, 3/23. Check back for more info later.
