Extra Practice on "Solving Equations" section of Test

For the test Monday, I provided a WEB practice today of more equation solving practice. The students who came to that asked for the problems and an annotated key be posted on the blog. So here they are:

Parabola Questions from Class

In Math 1, we're studying various functions, including quadratic functions. When we talked about the function being in the shape of a parabola, the following student questions spewed forth. Here's what I could find, answer-wise:

  1. Is the St Louis arch a parabola? Answer here.
  2. Are skateboard ramps parabolas? Answer here .
  3. Is the Golden Gate Bridge made of parabolas? Answer here.
  4. Are roller coasters built from parabolas? Answer must be inferred here. (Basically, the answer is, "perhaps")
  5. Are there any songs about parabolas? The empty link to someone's project is here. There's also a song titled, "Parabola," by the band Tool, but it seems more philosophical than mathematical.

How do you recognize a function in disquise?

...by its behavior, of course!

In Math 1 and both Integrated Math classes, we will return to our study of function parent graphs, examining evenness and oddness of functions, minimums and maximums, intervals of increase and decrease, domain and range, and asymptotes (where applicable). Also, we will look at transformations and how they show up both in the equations of functions and in their graphs. Quiz Friday, March 20.

Then we will spend a final week solving equations with square roots, rational expressions, and quadratics. Unit test Monday, March 30.

The last six weeks of the semester will be spent on Geometry topics.

Test Tomorrow - Thursday 2/12/09

Four students attended the study session from 1:45-3:00 today during WEB, for the Unit 4 Test tomorrow.

We used the smartboard to create notes on each section of the test, as it is labeled on your copy of the practice test.

Here is a PDF version: Download Test notes - the chance of winning - pdf version

And in case you want a blank copy of the practice test to practice on, here it is: Download Test Practice - The Chance of Winning
