Exceptional Children's Speaker Series

Please see the following message and attachment about a great series of Free Presentations from The Exceptional Children Committee of the Wheeler High School PTA:

Welcome to this year's Exceptional Children's Speaker Series entitled 'Putting the Pieces Together'. As in past years, we will be hosting experts in their fields to come and present on a variety of topics relating to Special Education and Gifted Education. And as always, these events are free.

The first topic in our series will be on Executive Dysfunction and will be presented by David M. Schwartz, Ph.D. on Thursday, October 18th from 7-8:30 in the Wheeler High School Auditorium. Wheeler is located at 375 Holt Road in Marietta, 30068.

If you are wondering what Executive Dysfunction is or if the topic would be of use to you, please see the attached flyer. I would also recommend 'googling' the topic. I guarantee this will be an eye-opening presentation! Please, by all means, feel free to pass this on to everyone whom you might think could benefit. We all benefit from sharing great information.

Your RSVP with the number attending is requested so that we can ensure we have enough materials for all. eric_and_debbie@hotmail.com And please note that teachers can earn PLU credits for attending these lectures!

Sincerely, Deborah Kauffman & Kate Maloney Exceptional Children's Committee Wheeler High School

Walton student is diagnosed with bacterial meningitis

Please see the following important message from our Principal, Dr. Tom Higgins:

October 10, 2007

Dear Parent/Guardian:

In our efforts to keep you informed, we want you to be aware that a Walton student has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis from laboratory results. Bacterial meningitis is passed from person to person by close, direct contact over several hours time. In order to be infected, a person must have direct contact with the respiratory droplets from the nose and/or the throat of the infected person. It is not spread by casual contact.

Early symptoms of the illness are sudden onset of high fever, intense headache, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting and at times a rash. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important. If your child experiences any of these symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Cobb County Department of Health is working closely with the school to ensure that these individuals who need a preventive antibiotic receive it. Once again, casual contact with an infected person does not put a person at risk of becoming infected. Those students specifically at risk will be contacted by the appropriate medical authority.

If you have any other questions, please contact your healthcare provider or the Cobb County Department of Health at 770-514-2432. You may also contact the school nurse, Yvonne Williams, Area 3 Consulting Nurse at 770-578-7900 X 258, or Anne Coyle, Nursing Supervisor at 770-426-3300.

Sincerely,

Tom Higgins, Principal

Red Ribbon Week Candy Gram Information and Form

Red Ribbon week is just around the corner, Oct 22-26th.

You may send your student a Candy Gram during this week to encourage them to stay drug free and alcohol free. Research has found that parents are the single most important influence on their child, so think about encouraging them by sending a Candy Gram. Your student can send their friends Candy Grams too! A copy of the Candy Gram form is attached. You can also find the form on the Walton Website under PTSA forms, at the front desk, or in the September Raider Review.

The deadline is October 19th. The Candy Grams will be delivered to the students on Wednesday, October 24.

Thanks!
